Patient Advocacy: Frequently Asked Questions

When is Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapy appropriate?

Google is a wonderful thing! If you have searched your symptoms and are wondering if therapy may be appropriate, ask your doctor. You can also go here to learn more: www.choosept.com.

Therapy may be able to prevent the use of pain medication and/or surgery! Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion!

Should my therapist have specialities or certifications?

There are multiple areas in which a therapist can specialize. A hot speciality right now, for example, is being “stroke certified.” These certifications mean a therapist has gone above and beyond earning their degree. They have taken extra courses and focused on an area in which they can become an expert. Always ask about the specialities or certifications a therapist holds. Inquire how long the certification took to earn and how long they have been a specialist!

What should I look for in a physical therapy practice/physical therapist (PT)?

We recommend that you look for a PT with whom you connect. You should feel free to ask questions about your diagnosis and treatment plan and receive adequate answers.

You should also think about whether you want to be in a group setting or if you want your therapy to be one-on-one.

Do I have to go the clinic recommended by my doctor or surgeon?

No, you do not have to go where your doctor or surgeon recommends. You have the right to go to the clinic you select.

How do I get specific information about the therapy clinic so I can make an informed decision?

Many clinics now have a website where you can perform your initial research. We highly recommend you call the clinic you are researching and ask for a tour. Even better, just drop in and ask to tour! Dropping in can give you a good feel for how welcoming the clinic is and how they treat potential customers! Finally, read Google reviews or ask people in the community about the clinic’s reputation.

Do I have to do anything to make my therapy really help?

YES! You should be given a home exercise program (HEP) to complete no later than the second appointment. Your performance of this HEP is imperative to improving!

Do I need to go to a clinic with a lot of equipment in order to improve?

A lot of people ask us about that. Our response? Our job is to assure you can perform your daily activities, communicate, and walk with appropriate balance! While the equipment is useful at times, we are more focused on patients returning the tasks they need/want to do daily. We have basic equipment such as a bicycle, treadmill, wooden stairs, 1 to 10 lb. hand and ankle weights, and lots of TheraBands. We also have parallel bars, balance boards, and a total gym. However, we don’t have a ton of other large equipment (like rickshaws).

We take a lot of pride in working with our patients one on one so you leave the clinic having made some true gains.

Have more questions? We’ll answer them.
